I am writing a paper for my English class; it is an argumentive paper on Internet Addiction. I have kind of hit a wall though, I am trying to think of some counter arguments to the statement, "Internet gaming is harmful." It would be helpful to see some opinions from fellow gamers. Just a few questions that might trigger some thought:
Why do you play internet games?
Do you think internet gaming is harmful?
Why is internet gaming a good thing?
What is your defense to statements like, "Your wasting your time playing games."
Any other thoughts/opinions on the subject would be helpful.

1. To burn time, and alot of my friends play the same games so I usually just play with them.
2.No
3.Helps to learn to get along with people.
4.It's my time I'll waste it how I want too
#1. because its a form of entertainment I enjoy. It relaxes me
#2 HELL NO... unless your an addict
#3 Well you can meet up with people around the world you normally would never meet, just have a good time and learn things. It can also be a healthy form of competition getting together with people of the same interests. Much like an internet/gaming cafe.
#4 At least I'm staying off the streets and out of trouble... and its not a waste of time. Its good eye hand cordination training... the world is evolving around computers. Might as well have some fun with it. Its entertaining, like playing a movie or playing a book. It requires reading, puzzle solving, coming up with stratagy. Its a good mind work out.
People who knock it just don't get it or are not good at it. Its like anything else in this world. Staying up all night playing is bad sure... but would we be better off out all night getting into trouble somewhere? I'd rather know all the youth are at home shooting eachother online then out on the streets doing the same thing
Okay I answered all your questions thoroughly but then my internet crapped out and I lost all that I had said. Either way, Oddlots Irregulars has some interesting articles concerning this stuff
I will re answer your questions later. Good luck on your paper.
Okay here are my answers:
Why do you play internet games?
They're a good way to relax. I think that's the biggest reason for most people. They introduce you to other people too. I've made friends through games that really are valuable to me. Some may consider that pathetic, but even if they were my only friends (mind you they aren't), where two people meet shouldn't have an effect on the value of their friendship.
Do you think internet gaming is harmful?
Internet gaming is no more harmful than any other gaming or any other hobby. In moderation, it is fine. In excess it, like anything else, can be extremely harmful.
Why is internet gaming a good thing?
Just like it isn't innately harmful, gaming isn't innately good. If anything, some games can teach a lesson in teamwork and cooperation. (D&D especially, though that isn't an internet game.) Also, computer gaming gives kids an exposure to computers which I believe will be important in the future. As technology advances, computers will be more and more integrated into society and computer fluency will become more of a necessity. While I may not fully like that trend, I'm certain it will happen despite my dislike.
What is your defense to statements like, "Your wasting your time playing games."
Gaming is a hobby like anything else. It just isn't recognized as such. I've had friends criticize me for how much I play games (not only internet games, not only video games). Usually my response is just to ignore such a comment. My gaming doesn't interfere with their lives and I don't ever value an in game commitment over a real life commitment (except in extreme circumstances). I figure that if they think their hobby is better than mine, then when I need help with say, my car, then I can ask them. That way they didn't only get personal gain from their knowledge in this area, but they helped someone else out too. That works for me with computers too.
Again, good luck on your paper.

To fill the time between my otherwise drab schedule.

In the wrong hands, yes.
An addictive mind is easily destroyed by addicting habits. People need to learn to plan their time so that it does NOT affect the future in a negative way. Whether someone's addicted or not isn't the point--the major problem is what happens because of it. Unfortunately, it's not something that can be told to them outright, they need to realise for themself that their path is leading to a bad end.

Why is internet gaming a good thing?
Depends on the person. As an overall establishment, internet games are good to the individual because they provide satisfaction. Whether it be a release from boredom, from life, from stress, whatever. As a societal insitution, internet games are NOT a good thing. They promote true social interaction in little to no way, and devalue courtesy and etiquette in lieu of the anonymity of internet use.
I'd like to refute the point that was made about meeting people and getting used to interaction, though. The difference between interacting in reality and online is as great as the difference between day and night. In fact, the more time one spends online, the LESS that person is likely to be able to hold a continuous conversation in reality. Why is this? Because when you talk in reality, you don't have time to stop and proofread your message, or to think before you say anything. The only real practice to interaction is going outside and actually doing it.

Wasted time is relative. Whether it detracts from something important later on or not is what matters. Spending time watching TV versus internet gaming (although the comparison is crude) really says nothing about the medium by which you waste time. It's all about moderation, some have it and some don't.
Also, if this is for an English course, I would recommend studying the differences between "Your" and "You're." These are two different words and mean two different things, and your teacher will definitely nail you if you get that wrong on a research paper.
Beacuse its a great way to get away from the stresses of every day life, relax and unwind. You can talk chat with people and just have an awesome time.

Its only harmful if people make it that way. If some perv is out there and taking adresses for every person that says there a girl, then yeah thats harmful, but its not the games fault - there are chat rooms and instant messaging and myspace (no offense anyone) that can do that as well. Theres nothing harmful about playing an internet game though, You meet people, you dont have to tell them anything about where you live or the truth about who you are if you don't want to, and you can play and have a good time.

Its a great way to play games. Im my opinion, its more fun to play with 7 other people then to sit in your room and play a playstation game by yourself.
Its relaxing, and it fun.

Well it depends on who is saying that to me, If it is my parents, then I explain why i play games. I say that it is enjoyable for me, It helps me learn how to work as a team and how to use your skills to be good at what your doing. If it is someone other then my parents, I say its none of your buisness what i do with my time.

Internet gaming is fun and safe as long as the person playing is keeping it that way, the only way it can be bad is if you make it that way.
I play them because I find them enjoyable and use them as a vent for my emotions. I also get to talk to people and interact with others around the world that I normally would not get to have a chat with, thus learning interesting things even while playing. I also play for the community, which I really like.
Do you think internet gaming is harmful?
Definetely NOT. Propaganda artists tend to say that, but in my opinion they need to read a bit more and actually observe the REAL children/teens playing the games, not the special cases who go psychotic (which are so minimally small that a scientific calculator may not be able to find the percentage of gamers who do.)
Why is internet gaming a good thing?
It can help build hand/eye coordination, it teaches kids and teens how to abide by certain rules in a community, and helps them build connections with others and learn how to strengthen them, especially if they have antisocial tendencies in real life. It also allows people who tend to be scared of their personal body images or race to make friends and get to participate in activities that they may not have a chance to do because of those factors.
What is your defense to statements like, "Your wasting your time playing games."
My normal retort is sometimes something like "You're wasting your time watching 300-pound sweaty men jump on each other for a hunk of leather with padding inside of it." but if the person who I'm responding to happens to be intelligent, then I may tell them about what I have told you about in the previous answers. I usually try to persuade them otherwise, though, because if you just say "no it's not" all of the time, nobody learns anything and people walk away with the same opinions that they had before.
Other thoughts: I wrote a paper on this about a month ago. It might have some quotes in it or other information that you could cite into your report. If you have an e-mail or MSN I could send it to you Cheers!
I play because I find far fewer offensive people in the games then in real life. The people I do find in games that are offensive are generally TRYING to be offensive, therefore I don't have to put up with them. I find various ways to ignore them best I can, logging off if I have to.
I also play because to me it seems that it's the where the last conglomeration of people who have a shread of decency about them reside. Last bastion of civility I suppose. (RPGs ONLY THOUGH)
2.)
Ultimately, it is the gamer and only the gamer who can create a harmful experience from gaming. It matters little whether you play 3 hours or 10 hours in a row. If you're a even a moderately sound individual with basic concepts of right and wrong, nothing an internet game throws at you compares to the news, let alone anything else in the world. In addition, gaming does not "rob" people of childhood or deprive them of experiencing life. That's media paranoia.
3.)
If anything gaming simply offers what everyone likes, options. Some people play because they've experienced to much life and need to get away. Some play because it's what they want to learn about, and possibly have a career in it.
4.)
My probable response would be, "Actually, wasting my time talking to you."
People like this generally know absolutely nothing about gaming, or so little it's embarassing. The only people who WASTE time gaming are people who don't enjoy it, or spend it trying to ruin the enjoyment of others.
The people who say we waste our time, are the people who are the degenerate "cousins" of online griefers. The run around in real life trying to tell everyone why should behave in a certain way or their lives will be ruined or the people saying it will thing less of them. The sad truth is, a good portion of these people don't have a clue what it is to think, or do things of your own free will.
Forget changing their minds, most don't have one of their own.
------
Well there's the "crazy, obsessive, out of touch with reality" gamer response for your paper, enjoy ^_^. (Note, the people who actually believe the things in the above quotes of this short paragraph, please stay away from me as you obviously can't tell the difference between an over zealous gamer, and a well adjust person who likes to forcefully argue their opinions.)

Heh, I'm a conservative, lay theologian, writer, LONG time gamer, and pushing sixty (this is not a joke). Anyone think online gaming may ultimately help break down walls of race, class, religion, and nationality? Think about it.
1. I'm bored most of the time. GW and other games help break the monotony.
2. No. You have to know the boundaries
3. It's fun. Plain and Simple.
4. Mostly my respons is F*** off B**ch.
